Do I need to put tones on internal storage?

I have a DROID 4 that I'm syncing with my employer's Outlook using a USB cable and Android-Sync app. I discovered that the default notification tone got reset to unknown and the default tone went into effect every time that I connected the Droid to the PC. Somebody suggested that I should put my notification tone in internal storage instead of on the SD card. That worked.
I seem to be having the same problem with ringtones. I went to a lot of trouble assigning ringtones to groups and individuals. All those assignments seem to have disappeared. I'm thinking that I should put the ringtones in internal storage also. I just wanted to ask before I went to all that trouble.
Thanks in advance.
