Is it possible to ADD fonts to a (rooted) android system?

I've got a rooted lollipop LG V10, and while I've found numerous articles on replacing the existing stock fonts, I've found nothing about adding fonts to the system.

Is there some config file that needs to be edited to add more than the stock fonts, beyond the average root user's knowledge? or is there some hard coded limit in the code that limits the system to only those fonts?

Just copying TTF's to the /system/fonts folder and setting perms, obviously doesn't work.... but is there any viable option that does work to add to the existing list of installed fonts, rather than replacing them with other (misnamed) font files?
